Festival de Cannes années 80-90 - Extrait 2
Michel Dédebat, a film buff from Toulouse, filmed his visits to Cannes between 1984 and 1991, when he went there to attend the International Film Festival.
Dédebat focuses on the Croisette and the area around the Palais des Festivals, where the main ceremonies have been held since 1983. In 1984, a device was installed to create a distance between VIPs and onlookers in order to delimit access to the Grand Auditorium. Here you can see it, with the famous staircase and its famous red carpet, as well as the photographers crowded into an area reserved for them.
The crowds are enormous and the security measures to keep the stars at bay are more evident every year. The director films the stars using zooms or overhead shots, capturing Gilles Jacob, James Stewart, Marcel Carné, Bernard Giraudeau, Anny Duperey, Werner Herzog, Costa-Gavras, Youssef Chaherine and Marcello Mastroianni, among others. In this film, the Festival de Cannes is seen as a great community ritual and the symbolic and social place it became in the 1980s.
