The Cinémathèque de Toulouse

Founded in 1964, and a member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) since 1966, the Cinémathèque de Toulouse is a locally based national film archive. Its collections hold nowadays more than 42,000 catalogued films, 75,000 film posters, more than half a million photographs, 14,000 books, 3000 periodicals and around 45 collections of paper documents.

Some aspects of film history are particularly well represented there and constitute a «centre of excellence »: French cinema from the 1940s until today, Soviet cinema, the so-called genre cinema, regional productions, non-fiction films from the 1920s until today and, lastly, amateur films.

The Cinémathèque’s collections, regularly enriched by donations and deposits from producers and filmmakers, whether professional or amateur, are preserved in Balma, in the inner suburbs of Toulouse, in a centre specifically designed for this purpose.

The mission of the Cinémathèque is twofold: on the one hand, to preserve films on silver-based format, as well as all documents precious for the history of cinema; on the other hand, to enhance the value of and disseminate the film heritage.

To facilitate the access to its collections, the Cinémathèque is equiped with a digitization system that offers you the possibility of converting the 8mm, S8 mm, 9.5 mm, 16 mm and 35 mm formats into digital form.

In order to continue with the digitization and the online sharing of documents, the Cinemathèque de Toulouse welcomes new deposits or donations that can contribute to the preservation of the film heritage in the best possible conditions.
