[Film amateur Hautefeuille : Cannes 1962]

Charles and Anne Rickard go to Cannes to participate in the fifteenth edition of the International Film Festival, from 7 to 23 May 1962. Charles uses a 16 mm camera to film the various festival sites and the atmosphere of the seaside town.

One image shows the staircase leading to the Palais Croisette and its triple entrance labelled: Officials, Vedetes, Jury. But despite this categorisation of the participants, the distances are short. At the reception with champagne and canapés, or on the beach where the stars pose and sign autographs, Charles Rickard captures the proximity and the mix of all these audiences: amateurs, professionals, onlookers, film stars...

The personalities of the moment (Jean-Pierre Cassel, Marina Vlady, Charles Aznavour, Juliette Mayniel, Brigitte Bardot) parade, sometimes in photo boxes, sometimes in the flesh. At the Palais Croisette, the public and the numerous photographers stand just a few metres away from the arrival of the celebrities. The most striking entrance is that of Jeanne Moreau, posing in a black dress and white cape amidst a crowd illuminated by flashbulbs.
