Départ pour Alger

Paul Dumanois (1885-1964), officer of the Legion of Honor, was General Air Engineer with a background in maritime engineering. He worked for the advancement of diesel engines and their substitution for submarine steam engines, and directed aerial construction at the Air Ministry. His various professions have thus led him to travel a lot during his life. This film, which he himself directed, deals with his trip from Port-Vendres to Algers in 1930, the year in which France celebrates the centenary of the colonization of Algeria. Many encounters then cross his camera: Algerians smoking hookah at the bend of a street, women in their traditional white clothes, a few tigers and monkeys, as well as camels behind fighters proud to show their weapons. At the same time, the port fills up with French military boats and one can observe the large bulwarks, the elegant elevation of many multicolored pavilions which befits commemoration.
