Vie militaire et scènes familiales ; Légion étrangère
Military Life and Family Scenes; Foreign Legion. In October 1962, the 2nd Foreign Infantry Regiment, placed under the orders of the command of military sites in the Sahara, settles in the Colomb-Bechar sector. Within the perimeter of the base of the Army (base camp of Hammaguir) the uniformed men and the civilians who came to visit them get together for a party. Surely, this is the traditional festival of Camerone. Some are seated at tables with drinks, others stroll following the attractions (a small makeshift train) and games (among them, inevitably, the petanque). Families are installed in the shade of an arbour. To the sound of the orchestra, couples and children dance. In a private area, a family gathers for a meal, during which a soldier shows the children how to handle toy guns. Then comes the moment of the actual parade, led, as has become customary, by the unit of Pioneers proudly wearing its distinctive signs: beards, buffalo leather aprons and the axes on their shoulders. They give way to a procession of vehicles made up by different motorized units with armoured vehicles. Spectators gathered along the main road, where the car of an officer of high rank restarts after the review. Then, some return to the bar for a last drink in honour of this special day that is ending.
