Le 14 juillet 1939 à Perpignan

The ceremonies on July 14 (Bastille Day), 1939 in Perpignan take place on the Avenue of the Platanes ("plane trees"). The troops are under the command of General Lavigne, General Inspector of the "concentration camps" for Spanish refugees of the Retirada ("exodus during the Spanish civil war"). Having reviewed the lined up soldiers, Lavigne, in cocked hat and red trousers, pass on to awarding decorations. We notice among the officials, sitting on armchairs, the prefect of the department, Raoul Didovski, in uniform; to his right MP François Delcros and second to his left, the mayor of Perpignan, Dr Laurent Baudru. And to his left, the bishop of Perpignan-Elne, Mgr Bernard. The parade, which proceeds towards the Castillet, is performed by detachments of the 24th Regiment of Senegalese Infantrymen based in Perpignan and detachments of the mobile Guards on foot, on horseback, on motorcycles and sidecars, in their dark uniforms, assigned to monitor the camps where the Spaniards who went into exile in France in late January, early February 1939, are interned.
